Just Thinking of Anne and Gil (Zorro Winner and New Contest, Too!)

In late winter and early spring, my thoughts always, always turn to “Anne.”  I’m serious!  It may be because the first time I ever watched the Kevin Sullivan production of Anne of Green Gables was during that time of year…at a time when I was feeling really low and out of touch with myself…and I can honestly tell you that “Anne” found me!

As I watched Anne of Green Gables that year, it was like a little light began going off in my brain…like a little voice was whispering, “Oh yeah!  That’s right!  That’s who I am!”  It was weird…the way a movie (and the the book) could put me back in touch with my core self.  And weird though it may have seemed, I was soooooooo grateful for the experience and to L.M. Montgomery for writing the “Anne” books!

And so, every year at this time, I find myself longing for a little escape into “Anne”…into her world…into Avonlea…not to mention the romance between Anne and Gil!  I mean, who doesn’t love Gil, right?  Seriously…what a guy!

I’m not going to ramble on today the way I usually do…because if you’re an Anne of Green Gables fan, then you understand my feelings.  And if you aren’t yet an Anne of Green Gables fan…rush out and become one!  AND this week’s contest is one way to do that!

But first…the winner of last week’s Zorro contest is…Brynette McKinneyBrynette…e-mail your snail mail address to me at marcialmcclure@cs.com so I can pop your Zorro DVDs in the mail to you asap!

And for this week’s contest…whether you already love Anne and Gilbert or whether you still need to hop on the bandwagon how about this…the audio (CDs) version of Anne of Green Gables!!!  Yep…here’s your chance to listen to the book I love so very, very much!  Just leave a comment here concerning anything “Anne”-ish and you’re entered!

I could truly write a book on why I love Anne of Green Gables!  So whether or not you’ve ever read the book or seen the movies…this audio version will be a treasure!  I LOVE “Anne!”

Oh I still remember when I watched Anne of Green Gables for the first time. I was so swept away, I had to get the books. I love both. My husband went on his mission to Prince Edward Island, and I have made him promise to take me. 🙂

  2. Stacey says:

Oh!! I love love love Anne and Gil! I loved this show for so many reasons, one being Anne is a fellow redhead. I too hated Gilbert for teasing her for her red hair,(which I dealt with as well, although green is much worse! ;), and loved her for her fiesty attitude, then fell in love with Gilbert as well. I felt like she was me or I was her or ..you know what I mean! For example, ” I know I chatter on far too much… but if you only knew how many things I want to say and don’t. Give me some credit.”. I am having a movie night(s) with my girls, and we are going to watch all of the Anne fun! Anne is definitely a kindred spirit!

  3. Rachael Lundeberg says:

Love, love, LOVE Anne with an e! Her and Gil’s love story is one of my favorites! Anne just makes the world right! : )

  4. AubreyB says:

I haven’t ever read any of the books, but a couple months ago I found them all at my local thrift store for 50 cents each, so I picked them up. Now I just need to read them. 🙂

  5. Pamela Hulse says:

I have never read the book or seen the movie. It’s on my list of stuff I want to do. But it’s hard when I don’t own either. My friends have always told me how amazing it is. Maybe this is my chance to finally get to know myself!

  6. Anna says:

I love Anne of Green Gables and can’t wait until my daughters are old enough to want to watch them with me. I hope they love classics the way I do. It’s fun to share movies/books you love with your kids.

  7. Candice V. says:

I LOVE Anne of Green Gables. My grandmother first gave me her books when I was young. Whenever I see the show or the books, I am automatically reminded of my grandmother and the gift she gave me of those books!

  8. I LOVE Anne! She is a character that, once introduced to, can never be forgotten!!! I still remember the first time I saw the movie… My roommates and I at college went on a movie marathon of Anne (trying to do homework in between commercials) and it was one of the best Saturday’s ever!

  9. Tiffani says:

Oh, I have so many things to say about Anne but I guess i’ll limit myself to a few. First of all, I love all of the Anne books, I even named my daughter Rilla (although it’s because it’s a family name and not really because of Anne’s daughter). I was sooooooooo looking forward to when she would be old enough to read and love the books too. But alas, she’s old enough, but says the books are boring so she hasn’t fallin in love with them yet (do you see how i’m still holding out hope?) My second daughter is also old enough and agrees with the first (which is rare, they are so opposite of each other) that the books are boring. They both like the movies, but don’t love them the way I do. You can’t even imagine my dissappointment. Oh well, I do have a third daughter that’s not quite old enough to fall in love with them yet, maybe she will be the one that loves them like I do. I always think of Anne in the autumn time. I love the scenes from Prince Edward Island with the beautiful colored leaves. Ok, I told you I had alot to say, but I’ll stop now….well almost now, I absolutely love the books, and movies and would love to own the audio (maybe my girls would listen and fall in love through it). thanks for making this the topic this week and thank you for having contests.

  10. Kim says:

My last year in high school I wrote a paper on L.M. Montgomery and her amazing books! I love, love, love Anne! He clumsy, never-ending thought process and indecision at times makes me feel so much like myself. I think she’s definitely someone ANY girl can relate to!

  11. Steph S. says:

I LOVE Anne of Green Gables. It was the books then the movies that got me hooked on all books by L.M. Montgomery. I have even gone so far as to tell my husband that I want to visit Prince Edward Island after the children are all grown.

  12. Cindy says:

I love the Anne of Green Gables series. I also have been to the house in Canada.

  13. Heather Hilmer says:

OH! I haven’t watched this since I was a little girl! I remember LOVING it and being swept away as well. What is it about this that “sweeps us away”?!! I have never read the book. I desperately want to now that I’m remembering the way I felt watching the movie!

  14. Shanna Eskelson says:

I love Anne remember watching it when I was young and thinking I was born in the wrong time

  15. Patti S. says:

I love the Anne books and movies. I love Anne’s character and how spunky she is. I believe that her views of friendship are wonderful! “True friends are always together in spirit”- Anne Shirley

  16. Lisa Anne says:

I love this movie! In high school my friends made me read the WHOLE book before I could even watch the movie. Back then I only read because I had to. I accomplished my goal and then we watched it! I was hooked!!! In fact, my middle name is Ann but I have changed it to ‘Anne’! And, before my first child was born I read the whole series and enjoyed every book!!! I will always love my bosom friends for introducing me to such a kindred spirit!

  17. Whitney C. says:

Absolutely love Anne! I hope every girl has a bosom friend just like Anne and Diana are to each other. As for Gil and Anne, we are all here commenting because we are hopeless romantics….so need I say more?

  18. Carolyn says:

I remember always watching the movies when I was younger! Loved them…need to read the books now! Thanks for all of your great giveaways!

  19. Katie Siddoway says:

My mother watched all the Anne a couple times a year. We would sit there and together we would cry forever every time we watched Matthew die. There were so many times in my life I wish I had a slate to crack over a boys head at school. One boy in particular, who just got to me-and I wish I could grab his nose, I found out my Mother almost married his Father!

  20. Jinky says:

What a wonderful giveaway! Anne of Green Gables is one of my all time favorite book! I haven’t seen the movie version …I’ve been hiding in a rock I guess. 😉

  21. Melanie Duffy says:

The romance between Anne and Gil is one of my all time favorites. I love when she finally realizes she loves him and their hott kiss. Unfortunately I have only seen the movies (I grew up watching them), I haven’t read the books yet and I am dying too!

  22. Teya Peck says:

Oh my heck! I LOVE ANNE! Spearheading a fundraiser for our little library, selling my homemade chocolates, we presented the money to them just before Christmas. The librarian asked what I would like in the library, I wanted to stay annonamous but everyone gave me away. So I simply said Anne of Green Gables ALL 3 movies, and they got them! I mention that cause i was just thinking of getting them for my Valentines today. Doesn’t matter if i get it or not, I LOVE ANNE!

  23. Teya Peck says:

LOL! Forgot to mention, I use to pretend that Gil was my boyfriend, LOVE ANNE AND GIL! I always felt she was my kindred spirit.

  24. I love Anne!!! It is because of Anne that I can describe my best friend and my relationship… we are Kindred spirits. Bosom friends.

  25. Megan E says:

I too loved these the first time I saw them on PBS with my mom, we want to visit Prince Edward Island once she had retired!!

However, they are so very dear to me because I was able to watch them with my grandfather years ago, (he passed away a few months after I was married) and he told me the love story of Anne and Gilbert was his favorite one of all time … yes I think he was truly a romantic man!! He was/is one of my most favorite people to have lived on this earth, in fact, he introduced me to many of the “old movies” I still love to watch!! I can not watch or read “Anne” without thinking of that amazing man and his influence in my life. 🙂

  26. Kirsten says:

Sad to say, I’ve never seen the entire series! I know I need to! I’ve been told it many times!

  27. Alysha says:

I love Anne, when I was younger I wanted to be just like her so one day I walked to the grocery store and got red hair dye to change my normal brown to be like her. When it was done, I did not look like Anne, instead I had really ugly orange hair and my mom couldn’t stop laughing.

  28. Sandy says:

I watched the movie when it first came out when I was just a kid. My mom and I were going to watch just a little bit, but it was so good we watched the whole thing in one sitting. I can still quote Gilbert’s speech and Anne’s response at the end. SO. GOOD.

I loved watching it with my daughter last year and seeing how much she loved it, too. What a classic!

(But who thought making that crazy sequel years later that completely deviated from the original story was a good idea? It was called Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story. I heard something about how the producer had the rights to make an Anne movie but not the rights to the original story so he had to make something up. It was TERRIBLE.)

  29. Frankie Sutton says:

I remember as a little girl that if Anne could get into so much trouble and get away with it, then why couldn’t I.

  30. Linda J. says:

I loved reading the books when I was younger and when the movie came out I was thrilled! Later I was on a plane that flew over P.E.I. and I remember the pilot saying, “..and if you look out your window you can see where they filmed…” and thinking, “Well, land the plane!!!!”. He decided we needed to head into Detroit as planned. We’ve worn out two DVD sets because we love them so much.

  31. Tara says:

I love Anne of Green Gables!! I still remember watching the series when it first aired on The Disney Channel years ago for the first time.

  32. Cami says:

“Tomorrow is fresh with no mistakes in it.” I love that line. It’s gotten me through hard days. I love Anne. I wanted to become an author because of her. Someday that dream will come true. The whole series is a good way to find oneself.

  33. Nicole Fry says:

I have never seen/read Anne, but I would LOVE to do so!! 🙂

  34. Katie says:

I watch Anne of green gable’s with my three little girls. I have loved it for many years now, and love that it has in it so many lessons, for the old and the young. Recently, I was putting my oldest (6yr old) daughter to bed, after a particularly hard day, and reminded her of what Anne says about tomorrow being fresh with no mistakes in it. She then smiled and said,” I love you Mom.” I have to give credit and thanks to the person who wrote that line.
